Services
The Manistee County Veterans Service Office has Veteran Service Officers who are accredited by the VA to assist in connecting Veterans to Benefits offered through the United States Department of Veterans Affairs. Our County Veteran Service Officers (CVSOs) specialize in filing compensation claims, pension claims for low-income Veterans and their Surviving Spouses, Survivors Benefits, enrollment in VA Healthcare, and Emergency Grant Applications. Our CVSOs will review the Veteran’s Service and help determine any health conditions that the Veteran has that could be caused by his or her time in service. Please call the office to schedule an appointment as our CVSOs meet with Veterans by appointment only.
Please bring the following documents to your appointment:
- Discharge Paperwork: DD-214, DD-215 (if applicable) , NGB-22 (If applicable)
- Medical Documents Showing current diagnosed disabilities or conditions
- Marriage License
- Death Certificates (If Veteran is deceased)
- Voided Check or Deposit Slip (The VA prefers to do direct deposit, and this is a requirement to establish it for payment)

Types of Service Connection:
- Direct- These types of injuries, conditions, or disabilities occurred on or were diagnosed during service.
- Aggravation- Preexisting conditions, such as a injury that occurred before service, that were worsened or aggravated by service.
- Secondary- This type of disability compensation is for disabilities, conditions, or other medical diagnoses that result from another condition that is service connected. It can also be caused by side effects as a result of medications used to treat a service-connected disability.
- Presumptive- This type of service connection is for disabilities that may not have started during service, but as a result of exposure to something. There are many presumptive lists depending on the exposure. The conditions on one list may not be on another. Please review Military Exposures - Public Health on the VA.gov Website for more information on toxic substances and locations.
- Medical Malpractice- This type of service connection is due to medical malpractice or an unforeseeable outcome from medical treatment at a VA facility or authorized by VA Healthcare.
