• Protect the health, safety, and welfare of citizens and animals in Manistee County.

• Enforce State Laws & Local Ordinances pertaining to animal control.

• Minimize danger & nuisances caused by irresponsible pet ownership.

• Protect pets from abuse, neglect, and homelessness.

• Provide temporary housing and care of homeless animals.

• Coordinate adoptions with Homeward Bound Animal Shelter.

• Provide “humane” euthanasia when necessary.


*Note:  ACO does not handle non-domesticated animals such as deer, raccoons, skunks or any other such animals.  Contact your local Department of Natural Resources (DNR) for complaints of that nature.



All dogs 4 months of age or older must be licensed and have a current rabies vaccination. Tags must be kept on the dog. Licenses are available at the Manistee County Treasurer’s Office or the Humane Society. Please contact either office directly for details.



All adoptions take place through Homeward Bound Animal Shelter (231) 723-7387

Animals are turned over from Animal Control to Homeward Bound after 4 days if there is no proof of ownership or after 7 days with proof of ownership (collar w/tags).
